Overview
Deer are the first huntable prey in the meadows, and the hide and meat they drop are your introduction to leather armor and cooked food. They spawn in both the meadows and the black forest. The trophy is a 50% drop and worth holding onto. Spirit damage does nothing to them, and chop and pickaxe damage are ignored entirely, so stick to the weapon types that work.
Tactics
Deer are the first prey animal you will meet, and they are fragile. With 10 health, a single hit from any weapon you have in the first few hours will put one down, so there is no need to chase a particular damage type. Slash, pierce, and blunt all work normally; chop and pickaxe simply do not register.
The practical problem is not the kill, it is landing the hit. A drawn bow is the reliable answer — shoot from a distance and you will not have to close the gap. If you prefer melee, walk, do not sprint, and strike when you are close enough that it cannot react to your approach.
The trophy is worth keeping when it drops, since it is the only one of the three drops you cannot farm by killing more deer. The hide and meat are the reason to hunt at all: hide is the early armour material, and meat is the food you will eat for the first few days.
